Publishers

For my music magazine, I have to establish who will produce my magazine. To do this I need to look at many different factors, such as what music magazines have they previously published, how well they have done and whether it is right for my music magazine.

My first music magazine producer is Bauer. Bauer is a major magazine producer which create music magazines such as Q and Kerrang!. If i went with this company, it would put my magazine on a list of major, well known music magazines. This is good because many more people would buy it and I would reach a wider audience as this company can afford high costing advertisement for the magazine. But, with a company as big as this, even though the magazine would make a lot of money, so many more people have to be paid who work from Managing Directors to Creative Directors.
Because Bauer is such a big company with over 300 magazines up and running, they can also get this magazine to 15 different countries, therefore making the magazine more well known. This company also has had much experience with different trends in magazines as the original company Bauer Media Group first started publishing in 1875.

Another major music company would be IPC Media. IPC Media produce the music magazine NME which is in the genre of high chart music or new successful artists, of which include: The Wombats, Muse, Florence and The Machine and Noel Gallagher. This company may be useful for my magazine as they pick bands and artists that everyone love, therefore making it a successful music magazine. But, IPC Media only produce a few music magazine, making less experienced than Bauer. This could mean that they don't sell that well in that area and therefore don't produce as many as Bauer. I must take this into account when deciding overall which producer of music magazines would be best for mine.

However, independent magazine publishers, such as Volcano Publishing, has it's advantages. Volcano Publishing produces a niche in music magazines and that is a good thing with magazines. My magazine is a niche in music, highlighting not only well know artists but new and upcoming ones in that genre, and having an independent publisher would give more attention to my magazine, making each issue exciting and unique.
Although the music magazines they produce aren't particularly well know, they still receive a large audience for such a small independent magazine company. Also, an independent music magazine company such as this would make much less money than what a major company, such as Bauer, would make. But, the costs aren't spread out as much as there is a much smaller production team to produce the magazine it's self.

Lastly, a music magazine producer called Green Chilli Media product acoustic music magazines which would be perfect for the genres I have chosen. My genre's are Indie, Rock and Folk, which all contain acoustic instruments such as guitars, bass guitar, drums etc. But originally the acoustic music magazines were not produced by Green Chilli Media, but by Oyster House Media. Oyster House Media had recently been liquidated and doesn't give me much hope with these magazines, even though they are now being produced by a new producer.

Overall, a major magazine company such as Bauer would be ideal for my music magazine as starting a new magazine can be difficult and having a major company would help with advertisement and with the years of experience that goes with Bauer my music magazine would have the best chance.

The type of shop that would distribute my magazine would have to be a shop that gets good business all year round and can easily restock the magazine if they run out. Superstores such as Tesco and Asda would be good to consider as they get millions of people within their stores every year. People go through these stores on a daily bases and walk through ailses they don't necessary need to go through. These would mean that more people would view my magazine than if it were on a small news stand.

Another place to consider would be WHSmiths. This shop is specially dedicated to magazines, books and school equipment such as pencil cases, note pads and stationary. This would mean that my audience would be more condensed to people who specifically wanted to buy a book or magazine and then would be more willing to buy a magazine. People in supermarkets, such as Tesco, would probably not stop and take time to look at the magazine as supermarkets are mainly for foods and necessities. From this I would say that WHSmiths would be the better option and people within this shop will take their time to look at the magazines as that is the type of store it is.

  1. Tabitha, I am really pleased with the work you are doing. I like the way you are putting what we are doing in your own words and developing your own ideas in depth. You also have a really good eye for design and visual mediums. Keep it up!
