Denotations are the things themselves and the connotation that follows it are the meanings we ascribe to that thing. Some examples of these are:
Denotation - blonde hair
Connotation - Stand out, ditzy, have more fun
Denotations and connotations can be used in within the magazine industry to appeal to their audiences. Such as, if it were a rock music magazine they would have a typical rock band on the front of the cover and not a folk band. This helps the reader to understand what type of magazine it is before even reading the name or what articles it had inside.
